What age can a child start using a computer?

Look at your child’s signs, not just their age.

There is no single right answer to “what age should a child start using a computer?” It is more realistic to look at your child’s signs than to decide by age. This guide covers three signs that suggest it may be a good time, and how to begin.

The short answer: look at signs, not age

There is no law or official rule about the age to start using a computer. Views on screen time also vary among families and among medical and education experts. Please decide on time limits at home, using guidance published by pediatric associations and similar bodies as a reference.

On this site, the games are made with ages 5–7 in mind. That is not a rule about age. It is a guide for deciding what the games contain.

Three signs that it may be time

These are guidelines based on our own thinking, not medical or academic standards.

  • Your child says “I want to try,” or reaches out. They show interest when you use a computer.
  • They can follow movement on the screen with their eyes. They point at things on the screen in picture books or videos.
  • They can stay with one thing for a few minutes. They can sit and focus on play or drawing for a short while.

It is fine if not all three are there. The moment interest appears is one good time to start.

How to begin: short, side by side, through play

  • Short: A few minutes is plenty at first. Stop on “I want to do more.”
  • Side by side: Sit next to your child and watch together. If they are stuck, speak up without taking the mouse.
  • Through play: Start as play, not practice. A game where one click brings an instant result is a good first step.
  • In a safe place: Sites with many ads can lead to accidental presses. A game that needs no sign-up and has no ads on the play screen is easier to leave with your child.

Free · No download · No sign-up · No ads on the game screen

Before starting school

In elementary schools, practice with mouse operations such as clicking and dragging in the lower grades is introduced in case collections from Japan’s Ministry of Education (MEXT) and similar sources. Your child does not need to do everything perfectly before school. Just touching the feeling of “move the pointer and press” can help them get used to it afterward.

For how to teach each skill, see “How to teach a child to use a mouse,” and the guides on double-clicking and dragging, which are the trickiest.

FAQ

What age should a child start using a computer?

There is no set answer. Decide at home, based on your child’s interest and how they are doing. For signs to look for, see “Three signs that it may be time” in this guide.

Can my child start a computer without any tablet or phone experience?

Yes. There is no required order. A computer is moved with a mouse or trackpad, so getting used to pressing, moving and letting go is the first step.

How long should computer time be?

We do not suggest a fixed time on this site. Decide at home, using guidance from pediatric associations as a reference. A few minutes is plenty at first.
